Saint Theophan the Recluse (1815–1894) left behind a vast and truly valuable spiritual and literary legacy. He authored numerous works on Christian morality, writings that disclose the foundations of patristic psychology, translations of ascetical texts (including the "Philokalia"), as well as profound interpretations of Holy Scripture that significantly enriched Russian biblical studies. His work was a genuine creative feat: not without reason, one of his biographers rightly noted that, in terms of the fruitfulness of Saint Theophan’s writings, they can be compared to the legacy of the Church Fathers of the 4th century—the golden age of Byzantium.
