The author himself explained the title of his work this way: “My novella ‘On the Eve’ is named so because of the time of its appearance (1860—one year before the emancipation of the serfs)… A new life began in Russia then—and such figures as Elena and Insarov are harbingers of this new life.” Turgenev is searching for a positive hero—a young, strong person with a new ideology, a “consciously heroic nature.” However, the novel does not open by chance with a debate about happiness and duty. Elena and Insarov believe that their love serves a higher purpose. But life itself enters into contradiction with the hopes and aspirations of the heroes.
