A collection of ten stories by Jeffrey Eugenides spans the author’s work from 1988 to 2017. In his stories, Eugenides explores human nature. His characters search for unconventional ways of continuing the family line, try to overcome hardships and keep living, decide whether to fight circumstances and themselves—or leave everything as it is. An unsuccessful writer who chooses to become a criminal, a young traveler who went too far in the search for truth, a clavichordist forced to give up their calling to support a family, men experiencing divorce in very different ways—these characters are touching, sincere, and remarkably real. They would like to be better, but circumstances aren’t always on their side. Some stories from the collection “Find the Guilty” echo the plots of earlier novels, and the story “The Inkpen” served as the basis for the film script “Friends with Money” starring Jennifer Aniston in the lead role.
