This book is dedicated to everyone who loves Valery Kipelov, Friedrich Engels, Carl Gustav Jung, the Strugatsky brothers, heavy metal, motorcycle brands, Confucian divination, the development of anything in any form, an unpessimistic post-apocalypse—and unloved love stories, or at least something (or someone) from the list above.
The action takes place a hundred years after the global epidemic that covered the whole world. In a village that has grown quite large, people live whose ancestors, according to legend, came from the accursed places—cities. The village hides among the hills, amid open steppes, and the inhabitants fear the outside world, from which anything can be expected. However, by sheer chance one young fellow has to leave his home settlement and go on a long journey to the sea—where his ancestors came from. He takes with him a small plastic booklet—an ancient Chinese divination—whose strange way begins to influence the surrounding reality. Or maybe nothing influenced anyone at all, because people are prone to building illusions...
Although the novel is, after all, a fantasy about a post-apocalypse, it has few fairy-tale premises. There are no unknown miracle-gadgets from parallel worlds, no aliens, no radiation that stays and doesn’t fade for decades, no giant twenty-meter mutants grown out of rats, cockroaches, grasshoppers, or any other small stuff. Although, of course, not everything here is scientifically reliable.
