London shudders under bombings; Britain freezes in anticipation of a German invasion; and peace reigns on Lord Westerham’s estate. But one day the war bursts into this idyll: near the Farley estate, a paratrooper’s corpse is discovered—undoubtedly a disguised spy who was clearly heading for one of the local residents. In his pocket, they find a mysterious photograph: it shows an ordinary countryside landscape that could easily be an encoded message. The estate sends Ben Cresswell, the vicar’s son from the area. For the young man, it is also a chance to be near Pamela Westerham, whom he has secretly loved since childhood. But in the old manor there are secrets beyond the dead paratrooper. Pamela has one too—since the start of the war, secretly from her family, she has served at Bletchley Park, the famous codebreaking center of Britain. Ben and Pamela must uncover the mystery behind the photograph and find the outsider among their own. The detective novel is based on a real story—in the war, part of the British aristocracy tried to bring to power Edward VIII, known for his sympathy toward the Nazis.
