Clarissa Dalloway, a society lady of fifty-some years, prepares for a reception hosted at her home. In the morning she goes out for flowers—she loves them—and the house must be decorated with them by evening. While walking through London, she remembers her youth, her first love. In another part of London, Septimus Warren Smith—a veteran of the First World War suffering from shell shock—goes to a psychiatrist’s appointment with his wife Lucrezia.
