Description

A traveler is caught in a snow avalanche in the Alps and comes to his senses at the observatory of a mysterious astronomer. It turns out that the scientist has been maintaining contact with Martians for many years—through an exchange of consciousness that takes place outside the usual flow of time. The hero must relocate into the body of a young Martian named Iz and see life on the Red Planet from the inside.

The Martian world is depicted as a socialist utopia: there is no private property here; art and sport are considered the main values; and life on the dried-out surface is sustained by grand canals and artificial seas.

“On Another Planet” is one of the earliest Russian science-fiction books about Mars, created long before the works of Tsiolkovsky, and it drew the censure’s displeasure due to its audacious social ideas.
