A hundred years ago Russian writers, poets, and artists fled the revolution and the darkness that, for many, became unbearable—darkness that descended upon the country after the seventeenth year. Is there anything we haven’t yet deciphered in their exile, in the experience of alienation? Does such a historical trauma as emigration exist—and can the experience of that trauma reflect something in us, today’s people?
