1820s. In his home country, already famous, the young English poet George Gordon Byron lives in Italy with his beloved and writes one of his finest poems—“Don Juan.” But his work brings no relief to the poet’s restless soul, deprived of turbulent activity and lofty goals. And when an English committee created to help the uprising Greeks offers Byron to go to Greece, the poet gladly agrees. He invests his own money in preparing the expedition and is once again full of energy. However, it soon becomes clear that the uprising is poorly prepared, and Byron makes desperate efforts to unite the scattered groups of rebels. In January 1824 he falls ill, yet nevertheless he takes command of the Greek-Albanian detachment—although it is already not meant for him to live to see victory…
