Description

Yevgeny Zamyatin is one of the brightest Russian prose writers of the early 20th century. He began his creative path within the traditions of neorealism, but it was the novel "We," which became the first in a famous series of dystopias of the last century, that brought the author true renown. Following Zamyatin’s book came novels by Huxley, Orwell, and Bradbury.

The book was received in the Soviet Union in a complicated and controversial way: critics saw it as a parody of the communist system. The writer was subjected to literary persecution, which is why he left the country.

The novel describes a grotesque formation of the future—an "ideal" Unified State, where only those who are useful to society are valued, and all spheres of activity are strictly regulated. Even love, in this world, is reduced to the regular satisfaction of physiological needs. The main character, engineer D-503, a valuable member of society, unexpectedly experiences this feeling for real—but his beloved turns out to be in opposition to the ruling system. As a result, the hero yields to betrayal, which leads to a dramatic ending.
