“Wise Blood” is Flannery O’Connor’s novel, which is on the list of the 100 best books of the 20th century.
Plot: Hazel Motes, returned from the war, is obsessed with the idea of driving God out of his heart. After meeting the cynical preacher Asa Hawks and his fifteen-year-old daughter, he founds a new Church—without the crucified Christ, where the lame don’t walk, the blind don’t see, and the dead lie in graves. But the meeting with the half-mad Enoch Emery, whose veins run with “wise blood,” makes Hazel truly “see the light.”
