Description
Events in Chechnya are told from the first person. The memoirs of Lieutenant General G. N. Troshev (1947—2008) are a unique document about the events of the late nineties in the North Caucasus—an honest account by a front-line general of that difficult time. At that time, General Troshev was one of Russia’s most popular commanders, deeply loved by fellow servicemen and soldiers. During his service in the North Caucasus, Gennady Troshev advanced from corps commander to commander of the Joint Grouping of Forces of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation in Chechnya.

On the pages of this book, the author—deeply familiar with the causes and events of the Chechen war—shares his thoughts and impressions on various operations and armed clashes, meetings with civilians, and negotiations with separatists. Particular attention is given to the invasion of militants into Dagestan in August–September 1999 and the events that followed.

“I may wear general’s epaulettes, but in my soul I was and remained an ordinary soldier of my Fatherland—service to which is the meaning of my entire life,” the general once said in an interview. These memoirs of Gennady Nikolaevich are filled with that meaning.
