This book is unique in many ways. For the first time, an unknown page is opened: the participation of Pacific sailors in the Battle for Oryol. The sources consist mainly of materials from the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. For the first time in historical literature, using data on individual units and formations, information about the losses of our troops is presented—thereby showing the price of the liberation of the Oryol bridgehead in 1943. Archive data are supplemented with information gathered by the author over 30 years of search work.
The novelty of the book also lies in the fact that, based on an analysis of the participation of the 116th separate marine brigade in the battles for the Oryol bridgehead, for the first time the Oryol Offensive Operation of the troops of the Bryansk Front in February–March 1943 is revealed. The book also includes tables of the brigades’ composition, lists of fallen sailors, lists of the Heroes of the Soviet Union, short biographies of the heroes, lists of veterans of marine rifle brigades, diagrams of the combat path of marine formations, and even copies of maps-and-diagrams showing the involvement of marine units in battles on specific directions, along with many photographs.
