Description
Eugene Sue was born on January 26, 1804, in Paris, into the family of a surgeon; his father was a physician to Napoleon. During the Bourbon return to power, he served as a royal physician. After graduating from college, Eugene entered university, in the medical faculty. His father owned millions, so the young man didn’t need to work. However, when a ship captain offered him a position as ship’s doctor on a warship, he accepted. From 1825 to 1827, Eugene visited the Antilles—Guadeloupe and Martinique—and witnessed battles of the French army against the Spanish. In his spare time, he began to write about what he saw around him: the sea, the everyday life of sailors, and naval battles as well. On his return, his parents advised him to show his essays to a publisher. Later, these notes served as the basis for, among other works, the novels “The Sea Robber” and “Plick and Plock,” audio versions of which are presented in this collection.
