Captain Marryat (pseudonym Frederick Marryat, 1792–1848) became known as the author of the so-called sea novel. Marryat was a sailor, took part in battles, and knew the life and routines of the sea extremely well. His novel "The Naval Officer Frank Mildmay", published in 1829, was the author’s first literary attempt. The hero of the novel joins the navy and goes through every stage of sea service accompanied by extraordinary adventures. The novel vividly and interestingly describes the customs of maritime life, the morals of the ship’s crew, and its main representatives. It successfully combines authenticity with engaging romantic invention.
