This collection includes Bulgakov’s works of an autobiographical character—an witty, ironic novella “Notes from the Cuff,” dedicated to his wanderings through the post-revolutionary Caucasus, his complicated relationships with the “red” authorities and with fellow writers, his dreams of emigration and his first attempts in literature—and the astonishing “Notes of a Young Doctor,” which are almost documentary sketches by Bulgakov about the sacred and terrible fate of a servant of Hippocrates in a poor, almost medieval Russian provincial town in the early 1920s. The book also includes “Morphine”—a frighteningly candid, agonizing confession that served as the basis for the film of the same name by Aleksei Balabanov.
