Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf was a writer, a politician, and an advocate for women’s suffrage. She was the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Lagerlöf’s childhood took place at the family estate of Mårbacka. Several generations of her family were born and grew up there. When the family nest was sold in 1889, it became a tragedy for her. Nearly 20 years later, having received the Nobel Prize, the writer bought the estate back. And in 1922 her memoirs were published—full of life and love for the place where her childhood had been.
