Description
In the 1st century BCE, the ancient Roman philosopher and politician Mark Tullius Cicero sends his young son in search of a mythical mantichore, so that he can be trained by it. The mysterious creature, it is said, emerged from the earth in Proconsular Africa and is considered an omen of disasters. But in the African sands, Cicero’s son and his motley group—consisting of a warrior woman who worships the Earth goddess, an inexperienced shepherd, Punic hunters, and a slave with revolutionary ideas—face far more dangerous beings with grand goals.

Albert Sánchez Piñol, the renowned anthropologist and a leading figure in Catalan literature, creates unique worlds where reality and the fantastic are intertwined in an unusual way. His works, as original as those of Jaume Cabré, follow the traditions of Lovecraft and Stevenson. In the novel “A Prayer to Proserpina,” an important choice stands before humankind and enlightened Rome: to change—or to perish. How far are people in any country and any era willing to go to resist the threat of total destruction?
