Description

As the plot unfolds, the mobiloids—having lost their human appearance—begin to show signs of group intelligence and also to use telepathy, telekinesis, levitation, and hypnosis.
The idea for the novel came to the author during a walk in New York while observing people talking on mobile phones. As an opponent of using cell phones, King in this novel turns to the theme of technophobia. The writer put the role of one of the book’s minor characters up for auction. It sold for more than $20,000. Literary critics noted a significant influence of the works of Richard Matheson and George Romero, to whom the novel is dedicated. Many of them praised the main idea, but remarked that the author’s return to the style of his early works ("The Stand") caused an over-dramatized melodramatic tone in the narrative and schematic characters.
