A widowed priest, Mr. Watson, suffering from gout, takes care of his large family: he has two sons and four daughters who are looking for suitors. The youngest sister, Emma, was raised by a well-off uncle, but after his death she returns home. She’s upset by the behavior of her middle sisters, obsessed with finding husbands, but she finds common ground with her older sister, Elizabeth. Kind and attractive, Emma quickly becomes popular in local society, but she will have to face trials to preserve her individuality. Although many of Jane Austen’s works remain relevant, this novel has a special history: it was originally only begun by the writer, and fifty years later it was completed by her niece, Catherine Habback, who continued the family literary tradition.
