First published in the journal “Inkilob” in 1922, and in 1926 it came out as a standalone book. The novel covers one of the most important periods in the history of the Uzbek people—events of the mid-19th century—and unfolds against a bloody backdrop of local rulers’ struggle for power. After the novel was released, it became clear that the dream of an outstanding writer had come true on the first attempt. “Gone Days” marked the beginning of a new realistic prose style, entering the golden fund of distinctive and talented Uzbek literature.
Later, the well-known orientalist academician E. Bertels wrote: “Abdulla Qadiri’s novels, in their entire structure and in their distinctive style, are Uzbek novels. World literature knows five novel schools: the French, the Russian, the English, the German, and the Indian. Now the sixth—namely the Uzbek—novel school was created by Abdulla Qadiri.”
