In his programmatic work “The Mythic Image,” American scholar and researcher of the nature of myth and symbol Joseph Campbell, through comparative analysis of the mythologies of different peoples of the world, as well as mythological literature, touches on themes such as the idea of cosmic order, the transformation of inner light, redemption through self-sacrifice and sacrifice, and spiritual awakening.
Based on his work on analytical psychology of C.G. Jung and the ideas of traditionalists, the author concludes that, despite the visible diversity of cultural and religious traditions, at the core of each of them are shared archetypal images—the Great Mother, the Mountain of the World, the Lord of Death and Immortality, the Holy Family, and so on.
