In sweltering summer, Luigi Riccardi, a commissioner of the Neapolitan police—an investigator capable of seeing the ghosts of victims of violent death and hearing their final thoughts—faces a challenging case once again. He must solve the murder of the Duchess di Camparino, a mysterious woman with a scandalous reputation and a tumultuous past. That night, when the whole neighborhood was loudly celebrating a festival in the square by the di Camparino palace, the duchess was found dead in the entryway of her own home. She was first strangled, and then shot in the head.
Who could have done it? There are plenty of suspects, but the clues refuse to form a coherent picture and contradict one another. Riccardi will have to follow false leads and risky trails to reach the truth—and the conclusion of the investigation will turn out to be unexpected.
