The Bourgeois Gentleman

A wealthy Parisian bourgeois, Mr. Jourdain, consumed by the dream of becoming a true nobleman, hires teachers of music, dancing, fencing, and philosophy in order to learn the manners of high society. His ridiculous efforts, clumsy imitation of aristocrats, and blind admiration for titles make him a target for ridicule and self-interested intrigues. Meanwhile, Jourdain’s daughter is in love with an honest young man, but her father refuses to hear of marriage to a commoner. This comedy-ballet is a witty satire of vanity, class prejudice, and the eternal desire to seem like someone you are not.
