Maid in Waiting: The Apple Tree

A collection by the famous English writer, Nobel Prize laureate John Galsworthy, includes the novellas “The Apple Tree” and “The Forsyte Deadlock.”

“The Apple Tree” is one of the most lyrical works by the author. The finest movements of the human heart, the charm of nature, the special poetic mood of the story— all of this inevitably brings to mind the masterpieces of Turgenev and Maupassant, to whom Galsworthy, as he himself admitted, owes a great deal.

“The Forsyte Deadlock” is built on a sharp conflict between representatives of the English aristocracy and the large bourgeoisie. Galsworthy departs from his characteristic epic style and satirically exposes the dirty business-mindedness and greed.
