Merce Cunningham (1919–2009) is considered one of the founders of contemporary dance.
He changed the world of dance by introducing new ideas and approaches. He rejected the traditional linear structure of a performance, preferring formlessness and abstraction. Cunningham also collaborated with famous artists such as John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol, and used computer technologies in his choreography.
His works became part of museum collections, underscoring his contribution to developing dance as an art. Thus, dance began to separate from theatre and become part of contemporary art.
