The texts “Matryona's Place” and “Incident at Krechetovka Station” were first published in the January issue of Novy Mir in 1963 under the heading “Two Stories.” This was the second publication of Solzhenitsyn’s stories. Novy Mir’s editor-in-chief Alexander Tvardovsky did not immediately decide to accept the stories for publication. The success of “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” (published on November 18, 1962) convinced him to schedule a second editorial discussion and finally print these texts.
