Berlin, the 1920s: a small boarding house houses a group of Russian émigrés. One of them, Lev Ganin, returns to memories of pre-revolutionary Russia again and again—his youth, his first love, lost yet still passionately desired. Accidentally, Ganin learns that Masha—one of his neighbors, Alfyorov’s wife—has arrived. Seeing her photograph, Ganin realizes it is his beloved, connected to the brightest memories of his youth. Ganin develops a plan to kidnap Masha and begins preparing to carry it out.
