Description
Gorjan Petrovski is one of North Macedonia’s most widely read authors. His novel “Marta” is taught in schools, and in mood it echoes Ray Bradbury’s “Dandelion Wine.” It’s a story for adults who have forgotten how to notice: the miracle is right nearby.

Marta lives in a city where, every autumn, grandmothers rise into the sky. A motorcycle and a car, who are in love with each other, run away from their owners. The art teacher plunges into a pile of leaves and disappears until spring. But Marta isn’t preoccupied with the city’s oddities—she needs to understand who her father is.

She will have to choose between the calm artist Borko and the dashing racer Vityaz. To peek into the house of the children who are unseen, to dig into her mother’s past. To find her father, who builds houses doomed to destroy themselves. And finally, to find her own happiness.

This book is a remedy for the blues: with humor and warm, steady confidence that in the end everything will turn out the way it should.

The novel is released as part of the “Magistral. Balkan Collection” subseries. As with the other books in the series, its pages are sealed at the trimmed edge, and the ornament on the cover alludes to traditional embroidery and carpet motifs. At the same time, the artist weaves signs and images from history itself into the pattern. The cover flaps can be used as a bookmark—where you left off won’t be lost.
