America in the time of the Great Depression. Eddie Kerrigan and his daughter, twelve-year-old Anna, come to stay with his friend Mr. Stiles, who owns nightclubs. His home—a luxurious three-story mansion by the sea—most of all astonishes Anna. And even more so the strange tension that runs between Mr. Stiles and her father.

Lately, Eddie’s business had been going badly. Maybe that’s what pushed him to meet this clearly difficult gentleman. She would remember that day often—long after she grew up—when her father disappeared and she ended up in an impossible for a girl job: working as a diver.

In any case, the United States entered World War II, and any free hands were worth their weight in gold. And then she meets Mr. Stiles again. This meeting will not only shed light on the mystery of Eddie Kerrigan’s disappearance, but will also turn the young girl’s entire life upside down.
