The title of the novel by the Swiss prose writer, the Ernst Willner Prize laureate Heinz Helle (b. 1978) “Love. Football. Consciousness” conveys its contents very accurately. The novel’s hero, a German student studying philosophy in New York, tries to apply the theory of consciousness to his own sense of life and to figure out his relationship with the woman he loves—but neither one and neither the other works out for him at all. Still, he manages quite well to spend time at a bar and watch football. This is the first meeting of Russian readers with the author, who is becoming increasingly popular in Europe.
