“LoveStar” by Icelandic writer Andri Snær Magnason (born 1973) is a dystopia with vivid science-fiction elements. At its core, created by the author in 2002, is the story of a couple in love resisting an international corporation that seeks to control not only the economy and industry, but also human feelings. The writer asks global philosophical questions: Where are the boundaries of human understanding? Is it permissible for a person to take on the role of God-the Creator? Can scientific inquiry be put at the service of commerce? In the end, what remains unshakable in the world and in the life of an individual? Inspired by works by Italo Calvino, Jorge Luis Borges, Kurt Vonnegut, George Orwell, and Douglas Adams, Andri Snær Magnason created an original surrealistic picture of the future—dark and oppressive, yet full of strange grotesque. The book has been translated into sixteen languages and has received a number of international literary awards, including the special Philip K. Dick Award (2012) and the French “Grand Prix of Imagination” (2016).
