Description
Irish writer and journalist Maeve Binchy (1940–2012) gained worldwide recognition with her debut novel, “Light a Penny Candle.” Her works have been translated into dozens of languages, and the total circulation has exceeded 40 million copies. “Firefly Summer” is Binchy’s third novel and an accurate, honest story of how a new era rapidly breaks into patriarchal Ireland.

The 1960s. An Irish-descended American widower returns with his children “to the land of his ancestors” and plans to build a luxurious hotel on the site of an abandoned estate. The town’s residents greet the idea with hope: the project promises jobs, money, and changes for the better. Even the owners of the pub opposite the future construction site are pleased, though they realize they may lose some of their regulars. However, reality proves far darker than anyone expected: the building project brings consequences that upend the familiar way of life and divide the life of a once-quiet place into “before” and “after”…

After the book’s success, the author, together with her husband, was able to buy a house in the suburb of Dublin, in Doleky, and named it “The Firefly Cottage.”

In 2008, BBC Radio 4 released a radio adaptation of the novel—a three-hour production divided into six episodes.
