Yuri Sotnik wrote his first story about a kitten living in their communal apartment in the fourth grade. The story won first place in a school contest and was even read from the stage. When he heard about this astonishing success, the young author asked his mother: “Can you live in a way where you don’t work anywhere and only write stories?” His mother explained what a writer is, and— as Sotnik would later remember—he really liked this profession. “The thing is, the little story was easy for me—no trouble at all, and I loved to mess around (to loaf off), so I quickly figured out that the writer’s profession was exactly what I wanted.”
After the first phenomenal success, quite a while passed, and then the famous “Vovka Grushin’s ‘Archimedes’” was written—the first published story by the author. After that came other no less interesting and exciting tales: “How I Became Independent,” “A Man Without Nervousness,” and others.
