Lecture 'Sobchak Between the Kremlin and Bykov. A Creative Evening'

“Our meeting with Ksenia Sobchak is a presentation and a discussion of the film ‘The Case of Sobchak,’ which Vera Krichovskaya made based on Ksenia’s idea and screenplay. The evening is called ‘Sobchak between the Kremlin and Bykov.’ Of course, we will be discussing this extremely well-known film, which I, among other things, have also sharply criticized.

The title is explained as follows: is it true that the Kremlin and Bykov are two poles among the circle around Ksenia Sobchak not because of political opposition, but because the Kremlin tries to ensure that the obvious is not stated openly, whereas I, by contrast, constantly try to name things by their proper names—even at the cost of maximum subjectivity. Together with Ksenia, we will try to spell out what is usually left unsaid, to touch on topics that may be painful for her as well—topics that are traditionally avoided. I see these zones of silence also in the film itself. We will reach the main paradox of our time: how, out of the consistent democratism of Sobchak’s students, today’s Russia emerged—perhaps the sharpest and most agonizing topic. In the end, it will be a conversation made of difficult questions and not easy answers, in a heavy, tense atmosphere. This event is not an easy one for me as the host and for Sobchak as the guest.
