December is a good time to remember Santa Claus and Ded Moroz by studying their stories, myths, as well as the differences and similarities between them. Santa Claus and Ded Moroz seem alike, like cousins: they have similar habits, long beards, and both bring children gifts for the holiday. But everything isn’t so simple. Archbishop Nicholas, who died in Byzantium in 345 and was later canonized, could hardly have imagined that almost two thousand years later an artist would depict him as an old man in a red fur coat with a white beard on commission from a famous company.
