“The Legend of San Michele” by Axel Munté (1857–1949), a Swede by origin and a doctor by profession, has been reissued in different languages for more than 70 years. But what makes the book attractive to readers is still a mystery. After all, the ability to handle words and to build a plot is simply not enough for success. Something special is needed—something only the chosen are given. Axel Munté wrote an autobiographical tale. However, the book can also be called a doctor’s notes, a mystic’s notes, or the notes of a mocker… and even the notes of a child who didn’t want to grow up. Read “The Legend of San Michele,” and perhaps you, too, will be able to solve its riddle.
