Nikolai Semenovich Leskov (1831–1895) widely and objectively reflected in his works the life of Russian society of his era— the era of the abolition of serfdom, the awakening of business activity among the masses, and the division of the intelligentsia into different ideological “camps.” Leskov also paid great attention to Russian antiquities, considering the experience accumulated by the people over thousands of years valuable for the development of society. The documentary nature of many of his works is combined with artistic expressiveness, psychological depth, and the vividness of his language.
This edition includes selected works by the author: “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District,” “Lefty,” and “The Dull Artist.”
