Ruth Thorn, a reporter for the city newspaper “Herald,” goes to the village for six months to take care of her aunt Jane Hathaway, who is leaving for Europe. In the note, Aunt Jane asks Ruth—without explanation—to light a lamp every evening in the eastern window of the attic, since this ritual has been going on for five years.
Settling into rural life, Ruth meets the mysterious Miss Ainsley and a young man named Carl Windle. Carl, a former reporter for the “Herald” where Ruth works, is temporarily unable to work because of eye problems. Following the advice of an ophthalmologist and the editor-in-chief, he also goes to the village for half a year to rest.
A romance begins between Ruth and Carl as they start planning their future together. But Aunt Jane’s return with a new husband disrupts their familiar way of life, and Ruth temporarily moves to Miss Ainsley’s place, where she spends a few more months in calm. Carl and Ruth prepare for their wedding. However, one day Miss Ainsley opens up to Ruth and shares her secret, explaining why the lamp in Aunt Jane’s house is so important.
