Seventeen-year-old Dasha realizes far too late that she will have a baby. Her mother, worried about her husband-deputy’s reputation because of her daughter’s unwanted pregnancy, sends Dasha from St. Petersburg to a small town in the Urals to live with her grandmother. There, by family decision, Dasha must give birth and hand the child over to a childless couple. At her new school she meets a young single mother, Natalya, whose story inspires Dasha to go against her parents’ will and manage her own life.
