Nestor Makhno is a well-known revolutionary anarchist, one of the key figures in the early years of Soviet Russia. He led a peasant insurgent army in Ukraine; he was an extraordinary and contradictory person who sincerely wanted to build a new world—“where the sun shines over all anarchist land, and happiness is for everyone, not for a small group of rich people.” His life was rarely calm: he faced serious danger many times, but he didn’t die—and that’s why people decided he had “nine lives, like a cat.”
