We present to your attention one of the early novels of the famous English writer Walter Scott, “The Legend of Montrose” (1819), included in the third part of the cycle “The Tales of an Innkeeper.” The novel tells of the uprising of the Earl of Montrose in 1645 and of the struggle of Scottish highlanders for independence from foreign English rule. The plot is based on the legend of Scottish Romeo and Juliet—a legend grounded in real events.
