To a girl named Mariya Yukari, all other people look like robots. She can’t distinguish expressions on their faces, doesn’t know what color their hair is—but she does see the rollers and gear-like mechanisms that allow her friend to run faster than anyone else at school. Of course, in reality it can’t be like that: people are people, and Mariya just has a head that’s wired differently, so human features appear to her as mechanical ones—at least until you get close enough to notice her special properties.
