The Cardboard Box

One of the passengers on a steamer traveling across the Atlantic discovers that two of his companions have brought some kind of small box aboard. At the same time, they are having strange conversations and clearly trying to hide their cargo from everyone else. It would be hard not to suspect them of intending to commit a terrible crime. But are those suspicions justified?
