219 BC. The Carthaginian commander Hannibal lays siege to the Iberian city of Saguntum, which has become a Roman colony. Hannibal decides at any cost to bring Saguntum back under Carthaginian rule—even if it means destroying the city. The heroic defense and the fall of Saguntum became the pretext for the start of the Second Punic War.
At the center of the novel is the love story of Sonika, a beauty who goes from being a port courtesan to becoming a wealthy and respected owner of ships and slaves, and of the Greek mercenary Actaeon.
