The story "The Dome of Saint Isaac Dalmatian" was written by Kuprin while in emigration. In the USSR it was never published. The story is dedicated to General N. N. Yudenich’s campaign to Petrograd in 1919, in which Kuprin himself took part as a war correspondent. When the Whites entered Gatchina on October 16, 1919, A. I. Kuprin enlisted in the rank of infantry lieutenant in the Northwestern Army, where he was assigned to be the editor of the army newspaper "Pinega Side" (“Prinevsky Krai”), which was led by General P. N. Krasnov. This very period of the writer’s biography served as the basis for his story "The Dome of Saint Isaac".
