By asserting the role of consciousness in the behavior of his characters, Ibsen constructs the action of his plays as an inevitable process that naturally leads to a specific outcome. That is why he firmly rejects any contrived plot twists, any direct interference by chance in the final determination of his characters’ fates. The denouement of the play arrives as the necessary result of the clash of opposing forces; everything unfolds in due course in keeping with motives, actions, and consequences.
