Palaniuk created a satire of the Hollywood industry, filling it with dark humor and countless references to celebrities—past and present. The main character is Hazy Keegan, a failure in the film industry who specializes in turning other failures into superstars. She trains and supports Catherine Keeton, a beauty who constantly lands the kind of roles that don’t matter—she’s used, cheated on, but still adored. The love triangle also includes Webster, a cynical hustler with far-reaching plans for Catherine.
