But for Toma, it quickly turns into a doorway to terrifying secrets: in the murky water of a dead lake, someone unseen grabs passersby by the legs; trees doomed for logging are covered overnight with ripe fruit; and through the night streets rolls a black carriage, pulled by enormous horses.

Dobromyslov shudders, because the tale of the Bloody Lady—who lived here two hundred years ago—comes back to life. She killed thousands of people and died herself along with them—yet now, it seems, she has returned to gather another bloody harvest. The curse that had been dormant for centuries has awakened, and Toma must descend into the very thick of the dark, where the story of an ancient family intertwines with town legends and the merciless truth about her own family.
