Description
We present you the novel “The Crusaders,” a classic of Polish literature and Nobel Prize laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz.

The action takes place between 1399 and 1410, during the decisive stage of the struggle of Jagiellon Poland with the Teutonic Order, which ended with the famous Battle of Grunwald—after which the might of the outlaw state was broken.

The novel was conceived as a protest against Germanization carried out by Prussian authorities on the territories of Polish Prussia. The author wrote “The Crusaders” to strengthen the hearts of Poles. He wanted the book to show Poland in the period of its rise and power.

The main heroes are the Polish knight Maczko and his nephew Zbys zko of Bogdaniec. Zbys zko’s tragic love for the noblewoman Danusia forms the melodramatic line of the novel.
